The Garment District recently went to the Philly Swap, which was held at the Urban Outfitters headquarters this year. Not only did we get a tour of the grounds but we were able to help out with the swap. There were also many interesting tables at the swap such as jewelery making, silk printing and garment reconstruction. We were also lucky to see a presentation by one of our professors Kelly Cobb!

Tracy Weidman from Punkrocknits came to the University of Delaware to teach the students how to knit. This group was composed to mainly non knitters and Tracy Weidman was able to teach us the basics and how to create in knit form. Tracy is a dedicated artist from Pennsylvania who has turned her hobby into a career, where she travels from show to show selling her creative and funky accessory designs. She is now currently selling in three stores and looks forward to expanding her knowledge and items in the near future. Tracy will be coming back in late November to teach us how to knit in the round!
The Garment District thanks Tracy for coming and teaching us a new trick!

The Garment District took a trip to Philly for a day on the town. We traveled to Philly to attend and enjoy the Philadelphia Designers Market which we attend annually. This time around we did not sell our teams but we did enjoy the day by seeing the sights and enjoying the culture and excitement of the city. Our next Philly outing will be durning Spring semester if you missed this one!

Nova Dance Company

The Garment District Fall 2009 Nova Dance Company

The Garment District decided to help a University of Delaware alumni with her newly started dance company. The owner Sarah Kim came to the club to design and create tops for the young ballerinas. We worked with fitting the clothes on the individual dancers and worked with the movement of the body. It was a great opportunity to work in the field of costume design and learn more about that side of design.

AdDress With Love

"AdDRESSed With Love" is my personal contribution to the earthquake victims in Haiti. I single-handedly designed & sewed a first goal of 200 dresses for young girls that were shipped to orphanages & schools in Haiti.

Hugs & Buttons,
Kimberly

Senior Kimberly Cignarella at the University of Delaware saw a problem in the world and decided to fix it. Haiti after the natural disaster need help from all different places. Kimberly saw that there was a need for the children of Haiti to have clothing. So she took it upon herself to make a simple pattern of a dress that could fit many sizes for young girls in Haiti. After seeing that other wanted to help she reached out to the Delaware community to help. Check out the event she held.
The Garment District Members attended an event hosted my ADdress With Love. We helped sew over 40 dresses to help Kimberly with her goal to make dresses for young girls in Haiti. I was a wonderful event with food, music and students working to help a country in need.

Here are some of the dresses we helped sew aren't they adorable!!!!

Our Professor's Art

Doctor Belinda Orzada
Smocking

Doctor Belinda Orzada started the roll on the monthly showcase of "Our Professor's Art". This showcase of artwork is an oppurtunity for students to learn techniques within design that teachers might not be able to teach during class. One of Dr. Orzada's talents within design is embellishment. She is known for her intrecate details adorning her award winning designs. Dr. Orzada decieded to share one of her favorite embellishments smocking. Our club attendees were taught the breif history of smoking, were shown her designs and then created our own smocking sample. Look forward to more Professors from the University of Delaware and the art they share with us.

If you are creating this summer please save those scraps we are making art and recycling and depleating the amount of waste we create as designers. We are making a flower wall for the Fashion Department at the University of Delaware. Below is a link to a video to help you get inspired on what our goal is to acommplish this goal. It can be similar to this or a variation. Use your imagination. Our first meeting August 30th will work with making these flowers a masterpiece. Thank you for your help.
