This year the Garment District took part in Relay for Life at the University of Delaware. We raised money and walked the track to raise money for Cancer Research. It was a great event which was organized by our Pubic Relations Chair Josie Sussman!!!
We were proud attendees and will continue to dedicate our time every year!!

AdDress With Love

"AdDRESSed With Love" is my personal contribution to the earthquake victims in Haiti. I single-handedly designed & sewed a first goal of 200 dresses for young girls that were shipped to orphanages & schools in Haiti.

Hugs & Buttons,
Kimberly

Senior Kimberly Cignarella at the University of Delaware saw a problem in the world and decided to fix it. Haiti after the natural disaster need help from all different places. Kimberly saw that there was a need for the children of Haiti to have clothing. So she took it upon herself to make a simple pattern of a dress that could fit many sizes for young girls in Haiti. After seeing that other wanted to help she reached out to the Delaware community to help. Check out the event she held.
The Garment District Members attended an event hosted my ADdress With Love. We helped sew over 40 dresses to help Kimberly with her goal to make dresses for young girls in Haiti. I was a wonderful event with food, music and students working to help a country in need.

Here are some of the dresses we helped sew aren't they adorable!!!!

Our Professor's Art

Doctor Belinda Orzada
Smocking

Doctor Belinda Orzada started the roll on the monthly showcase of "Our Professor's Art". This showcase of artwork is an oppurtunity for students to learn techniques within design that teachers might not be able to teach during class. One of Dr. Orzada's talents within design is embellishment. She is known for her intrecate details adorning her award winning designs. Dr. Orzada decieded to share one of her favorite embellishments smocking. Our club attendees were taught the breif history of smoking, were shown her designs and then created our own smocking sample. Look forward to more Professors from the University of Delaware and the art they share with us.

Art Project

The Garment District is working on an art project this summer. If you are creating this summer please save those scraps we are making art and recycling and depleating the amount of waste we create as designers. We are making a flower wall for the Fashion Department at the University of Delaware. Below is a link to a video to help you get inspired on what our goal is to acommplish this goal. It can be similar to this or a variation. Use your imagination. Our first meeting August 30th will work with making these flowers a masterpiece. Thank you for your help.

The Garment District-The Philadelphia Designers Market

The Garment District took a trip to Philly together and attended The Philadelphia Designers Market. We rented a UD van and drove up to Philly and wanted to sell our merchandise. We rounded up 4 designers from the University of Delaware, Josie Sussman (Pocket Full of Josie), Karen and Grace Malano (Space Cadet Sadie) and Lisette Ffolkes (Lisette's Designs)
While we were in attendance we were able to meet and view the artwork of Philadelphia's most celebrated designers. Designers working with jewelry design, menswear, women's wear and accessories too.
Just to name a few designers who were there. Duke Williams, Gretchen-greten@shopdahling.com, Independent Flavor- Independentflavor.blogspot.com, Poppy Seed-www.poppyseedtees.com, Danielle Marie Tobin- DMdesignz.etsy.com. And many more. We look foward to having these designers visit The University of Delaware next year.
